In the years 1999-2005, Lance Armstrong was ready to begin a record breaking winning streak. An interviewer asked him what the most important lesson he learned has been. He answered with one word. “February.” Asked to clarify, he explained, “In the month of February no one is looking. No one is watching to see whether or not you do your exercises, how much time you spend on the bike. But what you do in February determines what you do in July. Only you and your trainer know about your February.” Everyone has some of those unknown Februarys in our lives - days of preparation when no one is watching - days that no one sees that determine ultimate outcomes.
It’s effortless to aspire to be a champion like Lance Armstrong, receiving their trophies and rewards. It’s not easy to follow their workout plan and persist with the will to become a champion. The daily discipline and the sacrifices to become a winner are easy to ignore. We all WANT to do it, but not all WILL do it.
If we would simply exercise the truth of James 2:14-17 and put “action to our beliefs” then our faith would begin to increase and our faith is what pleases God…which is the ultimate championship. This fast is our “February”- the time of the year that we apply Godly discipline in our lives so that we can set ourselves up for success in God’s eyes the rest of the year. My prayer during these last days of the fast is that I would not grow weary in doing good the rest of the year, but I would sustain the same beliefs and actions that I practiced during the fast. That I would continue to grow closer to God and continue to strive to make a difference in someone else’s life!
How was your “February”?
